Frequently Asked Questions |
Q: |
What is Montessori? |
|
| A: |
Montessori is an approach to education
with the fundamental belief that a child learns best within a social
environment which supports and respects each individual's unique
development. |
| |
| Q: |
How did it begin? |
| A: |
Dr. Maria Montessori, the creator of
what is called "The Montessori Method of Education," based this
approach on her scientific observations of young children's behavior.
As the first woman physician to graduate from the University of
Rome, Montessori became involved with education as a doctor treating
children labeled as mentally handicapped. Then, in 1907, she was
invited to open a child care center for the children of desperately
poor families in the San Lorenzo slums of Rome. |

If you like what you see during your visit, simply fill out one Student Application Form. No fee is charged. That's it! Filling out that form and leaving it at the school puts your child on the Waiting List. The Student Application Form can also be returned later by mail or by fax. |

| Q: |
What is the "Priority" Waiting List ?
|
| A: |
Any child who attends the afternoon class in the hopes of eventually adding a morning position. Thus becoming a full day student, is on the "Priority" Waiting List. Likewise, any child who attends in the afternoon class while waiting to trade for a morning position, is on the "Priority" Waiting List. Siblings, waiting to attend, can be placed on the "Priority" Waiting List. |

|
| A: |
The total license count is 77 children. |
| |
| Q: |
What are the age limits Day Star will accept?
|
| A: |
Day Star's youngest students are a minimum of 2years 6months old to a maximum of 6years 11months old. At seven years of age, the child no longer qualifies for attendance under the licensing regulations. The 2years 6month old child qualifies to attend on the first day of that sixth month.........as long as he or she is toilet trained. |
| |
| Q: |
Does Day Star offer Toilet Training?
|
| A: |
No. The children need to be toilet trained before they begin at Day Star. |
| |
| Q: |
My child is newly toilet trained. Does she need to be able to do everything on her own?
|
| A: |
We are happy to assist your child as much as needed: pants up and down, help up and down from the toilet, wiping, fastening, tying, washing hands with soap, etc.
The important thing is that the child needs to have muscle control where toileting is concerned. The teachers will take the child to the bathroom periodically and they will watch for body language too! Occasional accidents are not a problem. A change of clothes, sent from home, is kept at the school for each child. Usually, toileting improves as the newly trained child watches other children also using the toilet! They learn from each other, just as in the Montessori classroom. |
